What I learnt from the UK

May 3rd, 2011

By guest writer, Janis Chng (a Singaporean based in UK)

I am going to share with you my experience of recycling / green living in the UK. I will write specifically about my experience in London, as I have been living and working here for more than 7 years.

Before I came to the UK, the only thing I recycled in Singapore was paper/newspaper — my family keeps these unwanted paper at home until the ‘garang guni’ (or rag and bone man) comes door to door to collect our unwanted recyclables.

The least we can do – Recycle

April 21st, 2011

Other than being Good Friday (in Singapore), today is also Earth Day – a day to remember the importance of living sustainably and responsibly, in protection of the one great gift we have received — our planet Earth.

Singapore has a long way to go in terms of environmental consciousness. Many of our people are too busy with building our future — our work/studies and our families/friends. There may also be some of us who are busy with killing time. So there is little time for the Earth.

How green is eco “Run 350”?

April 18th, 2011

On 17 Apr 2011, my hubby and I pulled ourselves out of bed much earlier than usual and headed toward town (Marina Boulevard area) to take part in “Run 350”. Other than wanting to lend our support for this “one-and-only-10km-eco-run-in-Singapore”, we also wanted to see for ourselves the eco efforts that were currently taking place in Singapore.

For background, the run was named as such to remind everyone of the need to keep carbon emissions in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million (ppm). This effort is crucial if we are to ensure mankind’s long term survival on this planet. Currently, the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is about 390ppm, and the excessive green house gas is contributing to serious problems like global warming and climate change. Hence, the run seeks to create environmental awareness on how all of us could reduce our carbon emissions and lead more eco-friendly lives, in a fun way.

Things are not made to last

March 8th, 2011

Sigh, things are not made to last.

Within a span of 2 months, two of my hair clips broke. Actually, it is only the tiny flimsy springs in them that broke. The remaining parts are still very much in good working conditions. I intend to try to repair it, but it would mean sourcing for the correct type of wire to recreate the spring components. If that is not possible, I might have to send the remaining parts for recycling.

Do my little actions matter?

January 20th, 2011

When i first started on my “going green” journey several years ago, I was fully convinced that if each one of us just did our little bit (just our own bit and nothing more) for our environment, the world would be a better, greener place. If everyone just recycled their unwanted items and consume only what is necessary and not waste, then it would solve today’s problem
